Arizona Daily Wildcat-Top College Paper in Western Region

Attention Wildcat haters: The newspaper seems to be doing very well:

The Arizona Daily Wildcat has been selected as the best college daily newspaper in the region consisting of California, Arizona and Nevada.The paper took first place in the 2008 Society of Professional Journalists regional “Mark of Excellence” competition. The award was presented Saturday at the SPJ conference held at Arizona State University’s Cronkite School of Journalism.Associate sports editors Lance Madden and Bryan Roy also earned first place in the braking news category for their coverage and discovery that Lute Olson had suffered the effects of a stroke during his 2007-08 leave of absence as head coach of the Arizona men’s Basketball team.Photographer Mike Christy also earned first place in the category of photo illustrations. Photo editor Sheldon Smith came in second.The Daily Wildcat will now be one of 11 nationwide college newspapers to be considered for the national Mark of Excellence Award, which will be announced during the summer.
